Over the last several years KADI Australia has been actively involved in projects targeting the community of Lijo, in KajoKeji District, South Sudan.
Lijo itself is a short drive from the border town of Moyo, in Northern Uganda. It is situated within the state of Central Equatoria, just south of the country's capital Juba. In large part, as a result of the war, Lijo has experienced very little development, lacking some of the basic facilities and infrastructure found in other parts of the country.
In this region KADI Australia's projects have included:
- Supply and distribution of treated mosquito nets to local families to help reduce instances of malaria, a significant contributor to infant and child mortality;
- Shipment of approximately 79 bicycles to local community to assist with transportation of clean drinking water and other materials;
- Provision of Australian Doctor and Community Nurse who volunteered their services at a nearby clinic in Kangai. During their visit they were able to provide treatment to hundreds of locals as well as training to existing clinic staff;
- On-going operation of ambulance service, which in the absence of treatment facilities in the area enables transportation of sick and injured to neighbouring town centres where they can be treated;
- Shipment of donated medical supplies from Australia;
- Establishment of nursery school, for local children, run by two local teachers and accommodating approximately 40 students;
- Sponsorship of local teenagers to attend nearby high schools;
- Establishment of animal sanctuary, managed by two local wild-life keepers to help protect and conserve chimpanzees;
- Supported creation of a plant nursery which to date has distributed thousands of seedlings throughout KajoKeji with the aim of slowing down the process of environmental degradation;
- Establishment of Jane Goodall's 'Roots and Shoots' program, regularly engaging with over a dozen secondary and primary schools in KajoKeji, educating students about the environment and encouraging the planting of trees;
- Assisting in re-uniting several displaced clans including Moipi (Clans from Uganda and Southern Sudan), Rangajin (Clans from KajoKeji and Juba District) and Ludra (Clans from KajoKeji and Arua District Uganda).
